In the heart of Osnabrück, Johannisstraße was resurfaced in the summer of 2022. The street connects key areas of the city centre and is used as a pedestrian zone, whilst remaining open to buses and cyclists. As part of the redevelopment, the PORR Osnabrück branch was commissioned to construct a concrete carriageway along a section approximately 260 metres long. In addition to resurfacing the carriageway, the verges were also upgraded.

Concrete carriageway for city-centre traffic
A concrete carriageway was used for the traffic areas. A total of around 1,700 m² of concrete surface was laid. The work was carried out within the constraints of a heavily frequented city-centre location. Limited space, existing bus kerbs, drainage channels as well as numerous manholes and widening sections influenced the construction schedule and the execution of the works.
Surface treatment using grinding techniques
Following the laying of the concrete surface, grinding work was carried out. Grinding and cutting operations create a defined surface texture that can be adapted to the requirements of the respective project. In this inner-city road construction project, this method was used to treat the new concrete carriageway. Parts of the work were carried out by hand, taking local conditions into account. Adjacent paved areas and lighting columns were protected during the construction works.
Collaboration between different specialist departments
Several specialist departments were involved in the implementation of the project. The company’s own building materials laboratory carried out the necessary in-house monitoring during construction. The Technical Office department drew up the joint plan for the concrete carriageway. The construction works were completed within four weeks.
Building within the existing fabric of a vibrant city centre
The project illustrates the challenges associated with the renewal of traffic areas in urban environments. In addition to constructing the new carriageway, the works had to be integrated into the existing city centre structure and coordinated with the various uses by bus, cycle and pedestrian traffic.
