A section of road approximately 4.5 km long between Schöneseiffen and Hellenthal was resurfaced. Straßen.NRW commissioned the PORR branch in Düren to carry out the work. The construction project involved both the complete reconstruction and the high-level resurfacing of the carriageway. Due to the geographical location, diversions were only possible over longer distances. The construction work was therefore carried out whilst taking into account traffic requirements as well as the scheduled construction periods.

Road resurfacing in the Eifel
Coordination of several construction phases
Construction phases two and three, with a total length of 2.9 km, were completed within three weeks. Various tasks were carried out in parallel: whilst milling work was taking place in one section, asphalting was already underway in another area.
The individual work stages had to be closely co-ordinated so that the various work crews could be deployed in accordance with the planned construction schedule.
Extensive earthworks and asphalting
As part of the project, around 8,500 tonnes of asphalt base course were laid over an area of approximately 32,000 m². In addition, around 16,000 tonnes of frost protection material were used. Furthermore, approximately 16,500 tonnes of soil were excavated and removed.
Construction work in winter conditions
The works took place during the winter months and were affected by the weather conditions in the Eifel region. There were repeated snowfalls during the construction period. In some cases, asphalt works were carried out at temperatures as low as –14 °C, and occasionally even whilst snow was blowing.
Works along a stretch in low-mountain terrain
Once the works were completed, the refurbished section of the road was reopened to traffic. The project highlights the demands that road construction works in low-mountain terrain place on the construction process, materials logistics and site organisation. The topographical conditions of the Eifel region, as well as the need to work in wintry weather conditions, had a particular impact on the execution of the works.
