L572, Borken-Burlo/Südlohn-Oeding

Borken-Burlo / Südlohn-Oeding, Germany / 06.2022 - 12.2022

In Münsterland, the much-travelled state road L572 between Borken-Burlo and Südlohn-Oeding was renovated and rebuilt. A continuous, safe footpath and cycle path link was created over 3.5 km. On behalf of Straßen NRW, the Münster and PORR Gussasphalt branches carried out the work as a joint venture. The roadway of the L572 was reduced in width from 11.00 m to 7.50 m over a length of 2,700 m so that a separate cycle and footpath could be created next to the roadway. The goal: to guide cyclists, including schoolchildren, more safely between the villages of Borken-Burlo and Südlohn-Oeding and to significantly improve road safety on the L572. In addition, several bus stops were converted to be barrier-free as part of the remodeling.

Large-scale cross-section redesign with full road closure

The team carried out the cross-section remodeling with full road closures at times. The construction work included the production and installation of a 30 cm frost protection layer of RC gravel as well as an asphalt base course and asphalt surface course. The team also renovated 2,700 m of the surrounding sewers and manholes. A further 2,000 m of the roadway were rebuilt, with the complete roadway and sub-base having to be renewed in some areas and PAH-contaminated material disposed of. In the remaining areas, the existing asphalt layer was milled down to match the profile.

Economic and sustainable realisation

To complete the cycle path, in addition to the 2,700 m of cycle path in the area of the cross-section redesign, a further 800 m were built in the area of the full extension.

Economic modernisation of the L572 between Borken-Burlo and Südlohn-Oeding

In order to minimise the impact on the environment for the construction of the cycle path, part of the noise barrier had to be cut away. The 1 meter high cut edge of the embankment was supported by a newly constructed dry stone wall. As part of the project, Verkehrswegebau also renovated the neighbouring roundabout in the village of Burlo. The entire surface was renovated over two weekends. The new surface course was made from mastic asphalt - a construction material that is 100% recyclable and offers economic benefits thanks to its durability.

Customer requirements "special adherence to delivery dates" safely implemented

The new X80 express bus route, which usually runs via the L572, was introduced during the full closure originally planned until 30 December 2022. In collaboration with the NRW state road authority, the construction schedule was adapted so that the full closure could be lifted four weeks in advance and the express bus could run on the L572 in time for the launch. In total, the team was able to reduce the construction time by 15 working days. The success factors in this project were the cooperative and close collaboration of all project participants. In order to keep an eye on the schedule at all times, the work was jointly organised with the allocation of personnel, materials, equipment and subcontractors for each day.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
