As part of a major refurbishment project, the national road 572 between Borken-Burlo and Südlohn-Oedingen was resurfaced and new footpaths and cycle paths were created along the route. Straßen.NRW commissioned a consortium comprising the PORR Münster branch and PORR Mastic Asphalt GmbH to carry out the work. In addition to resurfacing the carriageway, the project also involved the refurbishment of bus stops as well as work on the drainage and sewerage infrastructure.

Reconstruction of the national road, including cycle and footpath links
Redesign of the road cross-section
Over a length of approximately 2,700 m, the carriageway width was reduced from 11.00 m to 7.50 m. This created space for a separate footpath and cycle path along the route. The work was carried out in sections, with the road fully closed to traffic. A 30 cm thick frost-protection layer of RC aggregate was laid, as well as new asphalt base courses and surface courses. In addition, existing sewer pipes and manholes were replaced over a length of approximately 2,700 m. In some sections, the carriageway and sub-base were completely dismantled. Other sections were prepared by milling the existing asphalt surface to the required profile.
Expansion of the footpath and cycle path network
In addition to the 2,700 m of footpaths and cycle paths in the area where the road cross-section was redesigned, a further 800 m of cycle path was created in the section where full-scale works were carried out. Furthermore, several bus stops along the route were converted to make them accessible. To construct individual sections of the paths, part of the existing noise barrier had to be modified. The resulting cut edge was secured with a dry stone wall made of natural stone.
Roundabout in Burlo also being refurbished
As part of the overall project, the adjacent roundabout in Burlo was also refurbished. The resurfacing work was carried out over two weekends. Mastic asphalt was used for the surface course. This material is used in road construction, amongst other things, on high-traffic areas and can be recycled back into the material cycle once the road has been removed.
Coordination with other transport measures
During the construction period, preparations were made for the launch of the X80 express bus route. In coordination with Straßen.NRW, the construction schedule was adjusted accordingly so that the traffic management system was in place in time for the new bus service to commence operations.
Implementing the project required ongoing coordination of personnel, materials, equipment and subcontractor services along the entire route.
Road reconstruction on an existing route
The works on the L572 combine traditional road and drainage works with the upgrading of the accompanying transport infrastructure. In addition to resurfacing the carriageway, the project focused in particular on creating new footpath and cycle path connections, as well as adapting existing facilities along the route.
