As part of the expansion of the Erwin Müller mail-order company’s logistics site in Buttenwiesen, PORR special civil engineering’s Munich branch carried out the excavation shoring for the planned new buildings. The work involved constructing a shotcrete wall approximately 220 metres long using the wet spraying method, as well as back-anchoring it with around 1,200 ground nails. In the area of construction equipment and vehicle fleet management, the project was supported by PORR Equipment Services.

Shotcrete wall for slope stabilisation
Construction pits for high-bay storage facilities and infrastructure
As part of the site’s expansion, a high-bay storage facility approximately 28 m high is being constructed, as well as order-picking areas and associated traffic and infrastructure areas. Around 80,000 m³ of soil was excavated to create the construction pit. The topographical and geotechnical conditions of the site made it necessary to stabilise the slopes. To this end, a back-anchored shotcrete wall was constructed, which formed the basis for the subsequent building works.
Shotcrete wall and Soil nailing for slope stabilisation
To stabilise the construction pit, Soil nailing with a shotcrete lining was used in a wet spraying process. The stabilisation system consists of ground nails connected to one another by a shotcrete lining, which transfers the loads acting on the construction pit walls into the subsoil. A total of around 1,200 ground nails were installed. The shotcrete wall extends over a length of around 220 m and stabilises an area of approximately 2,600 m². The structure reaches heights of up to 18 m.
Geotechnical constraints require a tailored design
The cohesive soil in place was interspersed in sections with lenses of cohesive sand. Due to these ground conditions, individual sections of the shotcrete shell could only be exposed and constructed in stages. In these areas, the ground nails were arranged at closer intervals in accordance with the geotechnical requirements. Some of the work was carried out during the winter months. In order to be able to continue constructing the shotcrete shell even at low temperatures, sections of the wall were temporarily covered with plastic sheeting and heated.
System approved by the building authorities
A ground nailing system with general building authority approval Z-20.01-104 was used for construction pit and slope stabilisation. The work was carried out in accordance with the project-specific requirements and the geotechnical conditions of the site.
Foundation for the expansion of the logistics centre
By constructing the back-anchored shotcrete wall and installing around 1,200 ground nails, PORR special civil engineering laid the foundations for the expansion of the logistics site in Buttenwiesen. The excavation stabilisation formed the basis for the construction of the High-bay storage facilities and the other buildings.
