Micro-apartment complex HAR6

Hamburg, Germany / 02.2022 - 08.2023

PORR Hochbau Region Nord has been commissioned with the extended shell construction work for the “HAR6” project in Hamburg-Harburg. The new building will replace a long-disused, dilapidated shopping center. The ground floor of the building offers approximately 2,280 m² of usable space for commercial units, and the upper floors offer around 8,400 m² of space for micro-apartments and residential units. Around 2,970 m² of the total 20,570 m² gross floor area will be used as an underground car park in the basement.

New homes in Hamburg’s Harburg district

A working-class and port district becomes a high-tech location

As in Hamburg, the old port facilities in Harburg have also been repurposed. After HafenCity, Channel Hamburg is the Hanseatic city's second major urban development project. As part of this, Harburg's city center is also being revitalized, as the former working-class district is becoming increasingly attractive as a residential and working quarter. Several hundred technology and science-oriented companies have settled in the vicinity of the Technical University of Hamburg, making micro-apartments highly sought after by students and young professionals. Project developer BPD received broad approval for its plan to create primarily residential space on the approximately 3,220 m2 site of the dilapidated former Harburg Center.

Covering an area of around 8,400 m2, the building offers around 2,500 m2 of usable space for restaurants and retail outlets on the ground floor. The upper floors comprise 203 furnished micro-apartments and 31 multi-room apartments. The basement houses the technical rooms and an underground car park with space for 30 parking spaces. The building, designed by Schenk + Waiblinger, is prominently located between Harburg Town Hall and the train station. An open staircase leads directly to the Seevepassage pedestrian zone.

Although the complex has 12 floors at its highest point, it does not have the massiveness of the Harburg Center thanks to the variable building heights and the loosely structured building units. With its clinker brick facades facing the street, it blends harmoniously into its surroundings.

Tight space, high demands: Success through structured planning

The main challenges of the construction site were the limited space and the inner-city location directly on a busy one-way street that is frequently used by buses and emergency vehicles. With the support of PORR Equipment Services, the experienced construction team solved the problems that arose without any issues thanks to well-structured construction site logistics. In this project, adherence to deadlines was the customer's top priority. This customer requirement was met through open and cooperative collaboration between the client and PORR.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
