Old Golm
Municipal waste landfill "Old Brickworks"

Fürstenwalde, Germany / 04.2020 - 10.2021

On behalf of KWU Entsorgung, a municipal enterprise of the Oder-Spree district, the PORR branch in Eisenhüttenstadt carried out work on the surface sealing and reclamation of the ‘Alte Ziegelei’ landfill site in Alt Golm near Fürstenwalde. The project involved creating a permanent surface sealing layer across an area of around 4.5 ha, as well as upgrading an existing temporary surface cover over a further 2.1 ha. The scope of work also included adapting the gas collection system, constructing a perimeter trench around the landfill site, and relocating and grading waste and construction rubble.

Surface sealing on approximately 6.6 ha of landfill site

Reclamation of a former municipal waste landfill

The ‘Alte Ziegelei’ landfill was used as a municipal waste landfill between 1969 and 2011. Following its decommissioning, work was carried out to install the permanent surface sealing and to reclaim the site in accordance with the applicable technical and legal requirements.

As part of the project, the site was prepared for the planned aftercare programme and the existing technical facilities were adapted for future use.

Upgrading of the gas and leachate infrastructure

A key component of the project was the adaptation and expansion of the existing landfill degassing and leachate management systems. This included the modification of nine gas wellhead shafts, the laying of approximately 1,400 m of gas pipes, as well as the construction of eight leachate wells. This work was supplemented by the construction of around 430 m of sealed perimeter trench. The surface sealing comprises gas-tight and water-impermeable components. In addition, facilities for the detection of landfill gases as well as for the collection and discharge of leachate were incorporated.

Work carried out as part of landfill aftercare

In addition to installing the DK 2 landfill class sealing system, the project also involved the relocation and grading of approximately 24,000 m³ of waste and construction rubble. Machinery fitted with protective ventilation was used for this work. The various construction works were integrated into the landfill’s existing systems and tailored to the requirements of long-term aftercare.

Technical infrastructure for the site’s future development

The work at the ‘Alte Ziegelei’ landfill site combines traditional earthworks and civil engineering with the requirements of landfill construction. In addition to the installation of the surface sealing, the project focused in particular on adapting the gas and leachate infrastructure as well as preparing the site for further reclamation and aftercare.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
