New waterworks

PORR was commissioned to carry out the building excavations as part of a consortium for a new waterworks in Dörenthe/Ibbenbüren. PORR’s experienced team of special civil engineers was tasked with the horizontal sealing process for the pit bottom by applying a soft-gel grout blanket to the existing sheet-piled excavations.

Soft-gel grout blanket for trough construction pit
As part of a water supply strategy, the Tecklenburger Land Water Supply Association (WTL) decided to build a new waterworks and water treatment plant in Dörenthe, a district of the town of Ibbenbüren in the Tecklenburger Land region. It serves as a replacement for the existing facilities, which were built in 1952 and could not be refurbished or extended whilst remaining in operation. In addition, a water abstraction plant was built on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The surface water abstracted there is purified in the new water treatment plant, filtered through layers of soil and then treated to produce drinking water.
Environmentally friendly grouting method protects groundwater resources
The high water table necessitated a 5-metre-deep trough-shaped excavation with sheet piling and a watertight base for the foundations of the groundwater treatment plant, including a purified water chamber with a capacity of 1,200 m³. As with every project, the specialist civil engineering experts at PORR placed great importance on using a sustainable and environmentally friendly grouting method. The in-house developed Stump-Silitight 69 is based on a groundwater-compatible composition and simultaneously minimises the amount of cement required. PORR Spezialtiefbau holds the general type approval for this method from the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt). A team from PORR Spezialtiefbau Planung GmbH was responsible for drawing up the grouting plan.
