Bypass in the Kahren district

Cottbus, Germany / 02.2024 - 07.2025

On behalf of the Brandenburg State Roads Authority, Cottbus office, PORR Verkehrswegebau’s Eisenhüttenstadt branch, in a joint venture with Amand and Hentschke Bau, carried out part of the new bypass in the Kahren district of Cottbus. The contract comprised the partial construction of the new B 97 to the east of the district. A key focus of the work was the tightly coordinated asphalt laying using the InLine-Pave method.

The Kahren bypass has improved the transport infrastructure around Cottbus

Two kilometres of new federal road

The Kahren bypass was constructed in a total of five construction lots. Since February 2024, the consortium has been carrying out the fourth construction lot, which comprised the partial construction of the new B 97 over a length of around 2.1 km east of Kahren. The project contributes to improving the transport infrastructure in the Cottbus region.

From sub-base to asphalt surfacing

PORR’s scope of work included the construction of a gravel base course covering an area of 44,000 m². In addition, there were around 7,000 m² of unpaved farm tracks and 8,000 m² of verges. The project team also laid a new asphalt surface over a total area of 29,000 m².

Kahrener Dorfstraße routed without junctions

As part of the new traffic routing, Kahrener Dorfstraße was routed across the new B 97, meaning no junction was created at this point. Work on the designated bridge structure took place in parallel with the roadworks. During the construction phase, traffic was diverted via a local bypass.

InLine Pave over 24,000 square metres

The InLine Pave process was used over an area of around 24,000 m². This involved laying the asphalt binder and surface courses simultaneously using the hot-on-hot method. The paving took place over two days, enabling a tightly scheduled construction programme.

Precise timing for asphalt laying

A key challenge lay in coordinating all parties involved in the staggered InLine-Pave process. In particular, the deliveries of mix and the individual work stages had to be precisely synchronised so that the laying could take place within the specified time slots. At the same time, it was essential to meet the project’s schedule and quality requirements.

Digital coordination with SSO

For planning and coordination, the PORR team utilised the SSO (Smart Site Solutions) project management tool. This enabled the mix deliveries to be synchronised with the respective work stages and the specified time slots. The digital control system thus supported the coordinated execution of the InLine-Pave paving.

New traffic routing for Kahren

The bypass has created a new traffic route in the south-east of Cottbus, which contributes to the improvement of the regional transport infrastructure. Routing Kahren’s Dorfstraße via the new B 97 has enabled an intersection-free connection at this point.
