Parkhaus
Konstanz, Germany / 2024
The Europabrücke car park, a new transport infrastructure project, is being built right on the shores of Lake Bodensee within the city of Konstanz. The car park is being constructed on a site measuring approximately 77 × 33 m and will provide space for 745 cars as well as 150 bicycles. PORR special civil engineering was commissioned by Goldbeck Süd GmbH to carry out the pile foundation work for the structure.

Atlas piles, 22 metres deep, carry out foundation work for the Europabrücke car park on Lake Bodensee
On the right bank of the Rhine, next to the Europabrücke, a multi-storey car park with a total of 17 half-storeys is being built. The structure forms part of the ongoing development of the transport infrastructure in Konstanz. Even before the parking spaces, traffic areas and access zones can be used, the foundations of the car park are being laid deep below ground level.
Atlas piles on Lake Constance
The ground conditions around Lake Constance place particular demands on the foundations of structures. In Constance, the subsoil consists of clayey silt that is highly water-saturated and prone to settlement, and whose bearing capacity is insufficient for the planned loads. A total of 210 atlas piles, each with a diameter of 46 cm and a length of around 22 m, were therefore installed for the deep foundation. The piles transfer the loads of the future multi-storey car park to deeper, load-bearing soil layers and form the basis for the subsequent structural works.
Foundation on challenging subsoil conditions
Before the main works began, static test loads were carried out. The results served as the basis for the design of the pile foundation. In addition, obstacles in the subsoil had to be taken into account. The foundation was tailored to the site’s geological conditions as well as the requirements of the future structure. PORR special civil engineering planning as well as the in-house measurement technology team were involved in the design of the pile foundation and the load tests.
Construction in the vicinity of the Europabrücke
The atlas piles were installed using the full-displacement method. As the piles were driven, the foundations for the new multi-storey car park were gradually laid directly adjacent to the traffic area of the Europabrücke. The work was carried out within an urban environment as well as under the geological conditions typical of the Lake Constance region.
The foundation for the new multi-storey car park
Even before vehicles could use the parking spaces, the foundations of the new structure were being laid beneath the surface. The installation of the 210 atlas piles laid the groundwork for the subsequent building construction. Between the shores of Lake Constance, the Europabrücke and the city centre, this marks the creation of yet another transport infrastructure project in the Constance area.
