Hamburg, Germany / 03.2022 - 09.2023
The PFLEGEN & WOHNEN UHLENHORST care home in Hamburg was extensively expanded and modernised as part of the âInitiative Zukunftspflegeâ (Future Care Initiative). PORR Hochbau Region Nord was responsible for the project as the main contractor and carried out the construction work whilst the facility remained in operation. The aim was to create modern care services that meet the changing needs of older people whilst also ensuring the existing infrastructure is fit for the future.

Modern care facilities on Hamburgâs Outer Alster
The facility is situated not far from the AuĂenalster and, prior to the refurbishment of the existing buildings, comprised three blocks: Schwanenwik, Alster and Bellevue. As part of the modernisation, the site was expanded and adapted to meet new care requirements. This has resulted in a facility that offers residents greater autonomy, accessibility and comfort. In addition to the UHLENHORST site, PORR also carried out the construction of the WILHELMSBURG care centre and HAUS LINDE in the Wilhelmsburg district on behalf of the local authority operator PFLEGEN & WOHNEN HAMBURG GmbH.
Extension with a roof garden for people with dementia
The project began with the refurbishment of the inpatient care area in Building 1 (formerly Schwanenwik). The existing building was structurally extended, raised by one storey and reorganised functionally. Instead of predominantly shared rooms, single rooms are now primarily available, offering greater privacy and a contemporary standard of living.
For the extension, the north and east façades were demolished, the building was extended to the north and â with the exception of the administration wing â a fifth storey was added. Three extensions on the north side increased the floor area by around 170 m², whilst a further extension on the south side created an additional 146 m². Both the four-storey main wing and the three-storey south-eastern annexe were raised by one storey. A sheltered roof garden for people with dementia was created on the new stepped storey.
A conventional extension was not possible for reasons of weight and planning permission. PORR therefore developed a structurally sound solution using solid timber construction, which was subsequently clad. The implementation required close coordination with the relevant authorities, as special permits were required for this construction method in building class 5 and for special-purpose buildings.
Special requirements arose from the facilityâs ongoing operations: the basement houses central connections for electricity, water, district heating, IT and telephone services for all the buildings. This infrastructure had to remain reliably available throughout the entire construction period. With its successful completion, the PFLEGEN & WOHNEN UHLENHORST care facility has been sustainably upgraded and expanded to include modern care services.
