Farm tracks

Marl, Germany / 02.2025 - 03.2025

PORR transport route engineering carried out rehabilitation work on several farm tracks in the Polsum district of the town of Marl. A hydraulically bound base course (HGT) was used for this project. Existing material from the road surface was processed directly on site and reused for the new road structure. By reusing the existing material, less new construction material is required, as well as a reduction in the need for material transport and disposal operations, compared with a complete replacement of the road structure.

Rehabilitation of farm tracks in Marl-Polsum

Key routes for Polsum

Polsum is situated in the south-west of Marl and is predominantly agricultural. Farm tracks and access roads provide access to the surrounding land and also form part of the wider regional cycle route network.

Working in confined spaces

The refurbishment work was carried out between February and April 2025 by the Münster/Dortmund branch. The narrow paths, some of which were lined with trees, posed particular challenges for the work. Special care was taken not to damage the adjacent tree roots.

Existing material processed on site

For the rehabilitation, the milled material from the existing road surface was crushed and processed directly on site. The material was then consolidated by adding water and the NovoCrete® ST 98 cementitious binder. The processed material was used to create a hydraulically bound base course for the new road structure. This meant that the existing material could be reused immediately and remained on site.

Fewer transport journeys thanks to the in-situ method

In conventional rehabilitation, material from the existing road pavement is removed and either disposed of or partially recycled. In contrast, with the in-situ method used in Marl-Polsum, the reprocessed material was incorporated directly into the new base course. This reduced the need for new construction material as well as the effort involved in transporting and disposing of material.

Asphalting after 24 hours

Once set, the hydraulically bound base course was mechanically profiled and compacted. As early as 24 hours later, asphalt could be laid on top and the new surface course constructed. Due to the high load-bearing capacity of the HGT layer, less asphalt mix was required.

Connections for agriculture and cycling preserved

The rehabilitation project restored important farm tracks and access roads in Polsum. This ensured that connections to both agricultural and forestry land, as well as routes within the wider regional cycle network, were preserved.
