Schützengarten residential estate in Dresden
Residential and commercial buildings near Dresden city centre
The 19 buildings were constructed in two phases and comprise a total of around 28,950 m² of residential floor space. In addition, around 1,969 m² of commercial buildings were created for restaurants, offices and retail outlets. The four- to seven-storey residential buildings are grouped around, amongst other things, landscaped courtyards and together form the new quarter.
From dismantling to a new residential quarter
Before construction began, the existing buildings dating from the 1980s were dismantled. This included two eight-storey office blocks, a former canteen as well as a Cold War-era bunker.
Around 4,300 t of concrete from the dismantling was processed and subsequently reused to backfill the construction pits as well as in road construction. This meant that some of the existing material remained in use within the construction project.
Building Construction and Special Civil Engineering in a Single Project
Whilst PORR Special Civil Engineering created the conditions for the subsequent development, PORR Building Construction Region East was responsible for the turnkey construction of the building complex. The work carried out by the various specialist departments thus interlinked across several construction phases.
A New Urban Landmark in a Historic Location
With the Schützengarten, the site – previously used for other purposes – between Dresden city centre and the neighbouring urban districts has been given a new function. The combination of flats, commercial spaces, underground car parks and green internal areas further develops the site into a mixed-use quarter. The dismantling of the former buildings and the subsequent new development mark two closely interlinked phases in the site’s development.
