Siemensbahn

The Siemensbahn connects the Berlin districts of Jungfernheide and Gartenfeld. Following its closure in 1980, the line is being rebuilt as part of the i2030 project and connected to the existing S-Bahn network. The line was originally built in the late 1920s to connect the industrial and employment centres in Siemensstadt at that time to Berlin’s transport network. Today, the line is being rebuilt to facilitate the future use of the site and to connect the surrounding neighbourhoods. On behalf of Deutsche Bahn, a consortium comprising PORR, KEMNA BAU and MCE has been awarded Contract Package 2, ‘KIB New Construction’.

Reactivation of the Siemensbahn in Berlin
Rail infrastructure between Jungfernheide and Gartenfeld
The overall project runs through north-west Berlin over a distance of around 4.5 km. It extends from Jungfernheide via Siemensstadt to Gartenfeld and comprises various new constructions and refurbishments along the historic route.
Construction of civil engineering structures and transport facilities
The contract package includes the construction of various civil engineering structures along the route. These include railway bridges, stations, pedestrian tunnels, noise barriers as well as retaining structures. In addition, the project involves earthworks and civil engineering works, developments for the construction site as well as the provision of logistics areas for the entire project. The works cover the area between Westhafen station, the Lower Spree Bridges and Gartenfeld station.
Work along a historic railway line
The construction work is taking place in an inner-city environment and, in some cases, in the immediate vicinity of existing track systems. Consequently, various construction processes must be co-ordinated with rail operations and the existing infrastructure. Additional requirements arise from work on existing structures of heritage significance, as well as from measures in the area of the River Spree.
Digital planning as part of project preparation
A BIM model was developed as early as the tender phase. This was used to plan the construction processes as well as to take account of logistical requirements along the route. The various construction works are being carried out within a rail partnership model. Planning and construction are being carried out in close coordination with the project partners involved.
Infrastructure for the reopening of the line
The works in the ‘KIB New Construction’ contract package are creating key prerequisites for the reactivation of the Siemensbahn between Jungfernheide and Gartenfeld. In addition to the engineering structures and transport facilities, the structural and logistical foundations for further development stages along the route are being laid. The project is being implemented under a rail partnership model, in which planning and execution by the project partners involved are closely co-ordinated from the outset. It is thus part of the phased restoration of a historic rail link in north-west Berlin.
