Stuttgart 21 – Wendlingen junction

Stuttgart, Germany / 01.2019 - 12.2020

The existing Wendlingen junction of the federal A8 motorway is being transformed as part of the major Stuttgart 21 project. The Wendlingen junction construction is the final job section of the S21 project, before works continue to the east of the Neckar River with the construction of a new section from Stuttgart to Ulm.

Before reconfiguring the Wendlingen junction, it was necessary to build a bridge with two east-west railway and road overpasses over the B 313, parallel to the motorway.

Comprehensive performance

Several different specialist civil engineering services were required for this project: the manufacture of the construction pit using overlapping pile walls with diameters of 880mm and dead-man grouted anchoring. The pile foundations of the two bridge constructions consist of around 4,000m of bored piles (d = 880 and 1,180mm) to depths of up to 24m. Seven shaft structures were manufactured using jetcrete construction methods as an overlapping pile wall. Around 15,000m³ of excavated material had to be moved.

Additional measures were required to improve the site subsoil, with 16,000m of vibrated stone columns installed along the railway line.

Under direct contract to Deutsche Bahn
After an open call for tender, Stump-Franki Spezialtiefbau GmbH was awarded the contract directly from DB Projekt Stuttgart-Ulm GmbH, and implemented the comprehensive range of demanding services in a record-breaking time of just seven months.

Despite the high demands placed on team members and equipment by the difficult boundary conditions and challenging geological features of the site, works soon moved into the final stages with the project successfully completed in mid-April 2020.
