A44

Düsseldorf, Germany / 09.2025 - 05.2026

The A44 motorway forms part of the link connecting Düsseldorf Airport and the exhibition centre to the regional and national road network. Between the Lank-Latum and Düsseldorf-Messe junctions, the road surface was resurfaced on a section of the Düsseldorf motorway ring road. The work was carried out by a joint venture comprising PORR transport route engineering and EUROVIA, with the carriageways in each direction being completely closed to traffic.

Rehabilitation of the A44 near Düsseldorf using the ‘hot-on-hot’ method

Road resurfacing on a major transport route

The carriageway in the direction of Mönchengladbach was resurfaced back in September 2025. Work on the opposite carriageway was postponed until spring 2026 due to weather conditions. For each construction phase, the scope of works comprised around 9,000 m² of surface course in a conventional multi-layer structure, as well as approximately 47,000 m² of asphalt surfaces laid using the hot-on-hot method, as well as around 16,500 m² of mastic asphalt in the area of the airport bridge.

Asphalt laying using the hot-on-hot method

Inline-Pave technology was used for the majority of the road resurfacing work. This involves laying several layers of asphalt in a coordinated construction process. The work was carried out in sections, each approximately 950 metres long. During the night, several paving trains were deployed, whilst during the day work was carried out on the slip roads as well as on the approximately 1.2 km long airport bridge, amongst other tasks.

Work carried out during short closure periods

The construction work was carried out within specified closure periods. In addition to the asphalt laying, the project included milling work, the creation of joints, road marking work as well as the final cleaning of the traffic areas. The various tasks had to be co-ordinated and integrated into the planned construction sequence.

Road resurfacing on the Düsseldorf motorway ring road

The works on the A44 combine traditional asphalt construction with the requirements of a motorway construction site under full closure. In addition to the use of different construction methods, the project focused in particular on coordinating the construction processes, the works on the airport bridge as well as the implementation of the project across several closely successive construction phases.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
