Central railway station, Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt am Main, Germany / 01.2019 - 12.2021

Economical and secure on every construction site, even with challenging conditions complicated by existing buildings. That was the requirement imposed on the team by client DB Station & Services AG for the construction scheme at the Frankfurt am Main central railway station. Official fire protection standards required the refurbishment of the electrotechnical equipment in a new cable shaft tunnel at Frankfurt’s central railway station.

A 400m tunnel under the railway station

Two new floor ducts were constructed at depths of up to 2.6m for the project. The total length of the tunnel measured approximately 400m. As the foundations of the adjacent existing structure did not reach far enough into the ground to support the new construction, our specialist civil engineering experts used the jet grouting method, or stump jetting, to underpin the foundation along the entire length of both sides of the tunnel.

Jet-grouted underpinnings and floor slab for a cable duct tunnel

The roof construction of the railway station meant that individual foundation elements already carried significant loads, so these underpinning works had to be completed as nearly as possible without settlement. In places, jet grouted floor slabs had to be manufactured in the soil to provide reciprocal buttressing for the underpinning body.

Complex construction site logistics solutions

Electrically powered machines were only able to reach the ground surface after the first 400m. Outstanding close collaboration between all the companies involved with the site made it possible to overcome the complex logistics of this project. The extremely limited space, aged buildings and lack of inventory documents for the railway station meant works had to be regularly and quickly adapted to the actual geometric situation.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
