A starting point for exploring the sights of the royal capital
Mixed-use development at a single site
A Holiday Inn Express & Suites with a total of 198 rooms and suites has been built on the corner of Am Kanal and Französische Straße. Of these, 25 suites are equipped with a kitchenette and fridge for longer stays. The ground floor comprises around 1,200 m² of retail space. An underground car park offers 65 parking spaces.
Along Französische Straße, a section of the building comprising 126 micro-flats complements the complex. The façade design here differs from that of the hotel area, notably through the use of partially grooved surfaces and French balconies.
Façade design in a historic setting
The new building fills a long-standing gap between the listed Hauptpost and Französische Straße. The façade design and the choice of colours for the natural stone cladding were agreed with the Potsdam Design Council and the heritage conservation authorities. In doing so, the design of the new building was deliberately made more understated in comparison to the historic Main Post Office.
The micro-apartment section differs in design from the hotel, amongst other things, through partially grooved façade surfaces and French balconies.
Construction pits, fire safety planning and building construction
Several PORR divisions were involved in the project. PORR Special Civil Engineering contributed to the construction pits, whilst pde Integrale Planung was responsible for fire safety planning. PORR Building Construction Region East was responsible for the construction of the building complex.
New uses fill an inner-city gap
The building complex has given the area between the Main Post Office and Französische Straße a new purpose. The hotel, micro-apartments and retail outlets create a variety of leisure, residential and amenity facilities within a single complex. At the same time, the coordinated façade design takes its cue from the immediate vicinity of the listed Main Post Office.
