Roundabout conversion and road resurfacing, L 23 / L 38

Berlin-Grünau, Germany / 04.2024 - 12.2024

PORR's transport route engineering was awarded the contract by the Brandenburg State Road Agency to convert the Hangelsberg roundabout in the area of national roads L 23 and L 38 into a more efficient four-armed traffic-light-controlled intersection, as well as the section-by-section renewal of the L 23 road surface, including the construction of a large-scale bypass.

More than 12,000 employees work at the Tesla Gigafactory, located in Freienbrink, a district of Grünheide in Brandenburg, south-east of Berlin. In order to cope with the expected traffic load and to increase traffic safety, three construction projects are currently being implemented by PORR's transport route engineering in Eisenhüttenstadt. The L 23 / L 38 roundabout is being converted into a traffic-light controlled intersection with separate lanes for turning vehicles. The only exception is the southern arm of the intersection, which will have a combined straight-ahead and right-turn lane in addition to a left-turn lane.

The picture shows a street scene during construction work. A yellow road roller marked ‘PORR’ is laying a new layer of asphalt on a rural road surrounded by trees and green spaces.

In the course of the construction work, the existing superstructures of the roundabout, as well as the L 23 at around 340 m and the L 38 at around 360 m, will be dismantled. Subsequently, a new, frost-proof asphalt superstructure will be constructed on a gravel base layer covering 15,000 m2. Pedestrian and cycle paths will be arranged as before, parallel to the carriageway. For the traffic routing in 10 construction phases, temporary asphalt solutions have to be created multiple times and the verges adapted. In a third construction phase in the summer of 2024, the L 23 will also be renewed from the Storkow junction to the new traffic light junction in Freienbrink. A total of 83,000 m2 of asphalt will be milled and 90,000 m2 of asphalt surface course will be produced.

Since the L23 will have to be closed throughout the entire construction period, the contract also includes the construction, provision and dismantling of an extensive bypass. It runs from the Storkow junction of the A12 motorway via the L36 to Fürstenwalde/Spree and from there via the L35 and L38 to the construction site of the junction.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
