Clinker brick façades bridge the gap between old and new
Where marzipan and nougat were once produced and yarn was spun, an urban quarter with office and commercial space has been under construction since 2012 on an area of around 52,000 square metres. The master plan by the Hamburg-based firm Reinhard Hagemann laid the foundation for the redevelopment of the site. The new buildings echo the architecture of the historic brick buildings and translate it into flexible floor plans with bright and spacious rooms.
The façades of buildings 5 and 6 also mediate between historic building fabric and modern architecture: the handcrafted-looking clinker bricks anchor the building in the existing structure, while the filigree post-and-beam construction creates lightness and transparency. Generous window areas allow plenty of daylight into the building and enable natural ventilation. A recessed penthouse floor in timber construction complements the volume and adds a warm, contemporary accent.
Life pulsates around the listed chimney
The existing structure, including the 20-metre-high chimney of the L.C. Oetker marzipan and jam factory built in 1896 – once the world's largest steam-powered marzipan factory – has been carefully renovated. It gives the quarter its unique flair and also invites the Altona neighbourhood to linger. House 8, adjacent to the old boiler house, was designed specifically for gastronomy. Brick walls, exposed concrete ceilings and a fully glazed conservatory create perfect harmony with the historic surroundings.
