Rehabilitation of quay wall on the Zollkanal

Hamburg, Germany / 01.2021 - 07.2021

The historic quay wall on the Zollkanal is around 130 years old and lies within the core zone of the “Speicherstadt” - Hamburg’s historic warehouse quarter and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The effects of the tides and many years of use mean that the wall has suffered considerable damage in the form of cracks and various deformations. As a result, the chording of the timber sheet pile wall on the water side was missing in many places, leading to repeated subsidence on the land side.

Digital solution ensures safe rehabilitation of historic quay wall

Custom-planned rehabilitation

The rehabilitation plans involve using micropiles to brace the structure. These are initially attached to the old quay wall. The execution planning and structural engineering were prepared by our expert team. After drilling the boreholes, trial loads are applied to the working piles and acceptance tests are carried out to protect the quay wall. A specially made drilling scaffold, planned by PORR, is placed on top of the quay wall to ensure that the rehabilitation work can be carried out safely.

Micropiles with sleeve coupling

Once the inclined micropiles have been completed, a new sheet-pile wall will be driven in front of the old quay wall on the water side. The micropiles can then be extended towards the water side via sleeve coupling and anchored to the sheet pile wall in a chord planned by the client. Lastly, the client will install a quay head made of reinforced concrete with a facing wall shell to restore the wall to its original appearance.

A 3D model for high transparency, safe execution and optimised teamwork

Both the existing district heating tunnel and the anchors of the town canal opposite the quay, the St. Annenfleet, projected into the subsoil used for the bracing measures. The task was a demanding one, not least in terms of coordinating the various trades, and the 3D model from PORR Spezialtiefbau Planung made it easier to avoid collisions.
