Construction of the temporary bridge on the Südschnellweg in Hanover is progressing

/ Structural engineering / Press Release

The existing Südschnellweg bridge in Hanover will be replaced by a tunnel by 2030. Using a modular construction method, PORR is building a parallel replacement bridge consisting of 18 substructures, over which traffic will be routed during the construction work. Following the completion of substructures 13 and 2, the two most important intersections with Hildesheimer Strasse and Schützenallee have already been bridged.

Adherence to deadlines is the top priority

Supporting structure 2 is one of the longest bridge modules. Five longitudinal girders on each side were assembled with 35 cross girders before the steel structure was covered with prefabricated concrete slabs. Once the reinforcement was in place, the carriageway was concreted and the substructure is load-bearing in itself. ‘This modular construction method allows us to work on several structures at the same time.  In addition, we keep the space required for the structure as well as the construction site facilities as small as possible,’ says PORR project manager Konstantin Jury and continues: “Our primary goal is to complete this huge construction project, which will influence the cityscape and traffic in the Döhren district for many years to come, on schedule.”

3D model is the basis for coordination and invoicing

Excellent planning is more than half the battle in this project. The PORR team has been working continuously in decade mode since October 2023. The steel construction work at neuralgic junctions is being carried out during the weekend closure breaks in order to minimise traffic disruptions during the week. One particular challenge is the just-in-time delivery of the structural steel girders for the missing supporting structures. The heavy transports are navigated through the city centre in a very confined space with changing traffic routing.

‘A 3D model, which summarises existing and new construction data, serves as a basis for construction site meetings, coordination discussions with the client as well as transparent billing support for many engineering trades and earthworks,’ continues Jury. The construction progress and the next construction phases can be discussed precisely with the consortium partners as well as the Niedersächsische Landesbehörde für Straßenbau und Verkehr as the client on the basis of the current status.
