Rolled asphalt is an asphalt construction material used in road construction and transport route engineering. It is laid in layers using asphalt pavers and then compacted with asphalt rollers. The properties of the asphalt are influenced by its material composition, the laying method and the degree of compaction.
One variant is compact asphalt, in which the binder course and surface course are laid using the ‘hot-on-hot’ method. Production takes place in accordance with the relevant requirements regarding materials, temperature control and the laying process.
Application and performance characteristics
When properly planned and executed, asphalt surfaces can exhibit the following characteristics, amongst others:
- High-grip surfaces for traffic areas
- Level carriageway surfaces
- Load distribution within the layer structure
- Service life over the intended design period
- Protection of the underlying layers against weathering
