Highest priority for rural mobility: road resurfacing on the K270

Vechta , / Transport route engineering

On behalf of the district of Vechta, PORR Verkehrswegebau's Osnabrück branch renewed the road surface of Ihorster Straße (K270) between the Holdorf district of Ihorst and the roundabout in Mühlen over a length of approximately 2.1 kilometres. As with many road renovations, the subsoil presented a few surprises.

Sanierung unter Hochdruck: K270 erstrahlt in neuem Glanz.

The Ihorster farming community, a typical scattered settlement in the Oldenburg Münsterland region, is characterised by rows of trees, fields and farmsteads. For the residents, district road 270 is much more than just a transport link: it is essential for everyday life in rural areas. In order to keep the disruption caused by the full closure to a minimum and not delay follow-up measures, the team worked with the highest priority to complete the project on schedule.

After milling off the old surface, a twelve-centimetre-thick layer of asphalt base and surface course was laid on approximately 12,000 square metres using a high-build method. At the same time, the team adjusted the residents' access roads and the five-line drainage channel to the new road level and repaired the verges.

Complex ground conditions required flexible solutions

The difficult ground conditions and PAH-contaminated excavated material, which had to be disposed of using a consignment note procedure, put pressure on the deadline. During the work, the traffic infrastructure construction team encountered old asphalt base courses, packing layers or gravel base courses in previous road widenings. This inhomogeneous substrate was unexpected, so the construction process had to be adjusted at short notice. Additional measures such as excavating damaged areas and then levelling, recompacting and installing a new gravel base course were necessary.

Thanks to an outstanding team effort, the deadline was still met. Despite the difficult initial conditions, a carriageway of the highest quality was created – with optimum grip, evenness and precise gradient.
