Last stiffeners installed for the U5

Frankfurt, / Structural engineering

The extension of the U5 subway line to Frankfurt's Europaviertel district continues to gather momentum. An important milestone was reached with the successful installation of the last of a total of 50 stiffeners, each up to 20 meters long. The work, which lasted from mid-May to mid-September, completes a central construction phase and lays the foundation for the next steps in the project.

The two existing walls were opened at a depth of 17 metres.

First concrete section for station ceiling poured

Block 2.1, the first of a total of 16 concrete sections for the ceiling of the new Güterplatz subway station, is currently being poured. For block 2.1 alone, the PORR civil engineering team is using around 360 cubic meters of concrete – an impressive amount that illustrates the scale and complexity of the project. The station is being built using the open construction method and will be the deepest subway station in Frankfurt.

Technical breakthrough at Platz der Republik

A breakthrough has also been achieved under Platz der Republik, one of the city's busiest traffic junctions: at a depth of 17 meters, the two existing walls that previously separated the new tunnel tubes from the existing subway tunnel at the main station were opened. This precise intervention secures the connection to the existing infrastructure, demonstrating the high level of engineering skill behind the project.

Seamless connection to the Europaviertel

The new light rail line will be approximately 2,750 meters long and will seamlessly connect the Europaviertel, which was built on the site of the former main freight station, to the existing subway network. Back in 2017, the U5 Europaviertel consortium was awarded the contract by SBEV – Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte Frankfurt GmbH to build the 1,160-meter-long underground section. In addition to the connection to the existing U5 line, this also includes the construction of an emergency exit and the shell of the Güterplatz station.
