Full displacement piles
Foundation element with complete displacement of the soil

Full-displacement piles are used in building construction, industrial and infrastructure projects. As the soil is completely displaced, there is no conventional excavation. Depending on the system, the piles can also be used in energy pile or Greenpile® applications.

Full displacement piles
in accordance with DIN EN 12 699

Full displacement drilled piles (VVB), also known as Screw piles, are manufactured as atlas piles or fundex piles. They are used as deep foundation elements for a variety of subsoil conditions and project requirements.

They are constructed by completely displacing the soil. As the soil is completely displaced, no conventional soil excavation is required during construction. This can be taken into account when planning transport, logistics and waste disposal concepts. Depending on the project requirements, these pile systems are used in a variety of ground conditions as well as in areas with adjacent structures.

Installation is carried out using rotary drilling. The selection and dimensioning of the piles are based on the geotechnical, structural and project-specific requirements.

Applications

Full displacement drilled piles are used as deep foundation elements for a variety of building and infrastructure projects.

These include, amongst others:

  • Residential and commercial buildings
  • Office blocks and hotels
  • Industrial buildings
  • Bridges
  • Construction projects involving adjacent structures that are sensitive to deformation or settlement

Benefits / Features

Screw piles can be adapted to different subsoil conditions and project requirements through various design options. The pile system is selected taking into account the geological, technical and structural constraints.

  • Installation: Low-noise installation with minimal vibrations is possible.
  • Load transfer: Capable of withstanding tensile and compressive loads.
  • Pile resistances: Depending on the subsoil conditions, characteristic pile resistances Rk of up to 4,000 kN are possible.
  • Atlas pile: High skin friction due to full soil displacement.
  • Fundex pile: Pile system with pronounced load transfer via the pile tip.
  • Soil management: Full soil displacement without conventional soil excavation.
  • Application conditions: Can also be used on contaminated sites.
  • Resistance–settlement behaviour: Suitable for various load and ground conditions.
  • Design: Construction is possible even where working height is limited.
  • Pile types: Can be constructed as vertical or inclined piles with slopes of up to 4:1.
  • Design variants: Can be constructed as energy piles.
  • Soil displacement: Full displacement drilled piles are marketed under the name Greenpile® and are characterised by full soil displacement without conventional soil excavation

Basic facts

Our displacement piles in accordance with DIN EN 12 699 include:

  • Driven precast piles (steel pipe piles)
  • In-situ concrete driven piles (Frankipfahl piles, Simplex piles)
  • Helical piles (Atlas piles, Fundex piles)
  • Grouted displacement piles (ductile piles, HPD piles)

Helical piles are designed and manufactured in accordance with Eurocode 7 and DIN EN 12 699 and the recommendations of the “Piles” working group (EA-Pfähle). Diameters can range from 38/45cm to 51/61cm (inside/outside). Pile lengths of up to 30m are possible.

The following types of foundations are possible:

  • Single pile foundations with one-dimensional load transfer
  • Group pile foundations with two-dimensional load transfer
  • Special case: combined pile raft foundations

The wide variety of available variants allows us to adapt to the most diverse subsoil conditions and construction site scenarios in order to achieve high load-bearing capacities.

Quality assurance

When constructing full displacement drilled piles, the requirements of European and national standards, as well as the recommendations of the ‘Piles’ Working Group (EA-Pfähle), must be taken into account. Self-monitoring and the documentation of construction work are governed by the relevant construction standards.

The construction of full displacement drilled piles is carried out in accordance with project-specific procedural instructions. The selection and adjustment of construction parameters are based on the respective subsoil conditions, load requirements and project specifications. The specialist equipment is operated by suitably qualified personnel.

Principles of execution

  • Project-specific procedural instructions
  • Requirements in accordance with DIN EN 12699, Eurocode 7 and EA piles
  • Quality management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015
  • Static and dynamic pile load tests
  • Pile integrity tests
  • Documentation and self-monitoring in accordance with construction standards

Design variants

A range of pile systems and design variants are available for the construction of full displacement drilled piles. The choice is made in accordance with the ground conditions as well as the technical and project-specific requirements.
