Güterplatz station forms part of the extension of the U5 underground line into Frankfurt’s Europaviertel district. On behalf of SBEV – Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte Frankfurt GmbH, PORR is carrying out this major infrastructure project in Frankfurt city centre. This includes the approximately 1,160-metre-long underground section, the connection to the existing U5 line as well as the structural work for the underground Güterplatz station.

The completion of the ceiling is a significant milestone in the project. At the same time, further components of the station are being constructed. Furthermore, the completion of the ceiling work is a prerequisite for backfilling the construction pit.

“With the completion of the ceiling, we have made significant progress in the construction of the Güterplatz station. This progress is the result of close cooperation between all project stakeholders as well as the high level of commitment shown by our team on site,” says Project Manager Joachim Loos of PORR structural engineering.

The future Güterplatz station is being built at a depth of around 24 metres. In the construction pit, which is up to 180 metres long and 30 metres wide, the necessary technical infrastructure for the future operation of the U5 line has been installed alongside the station structure itself. A particularly striking feature is the station’s column-free design, whose spacious layout will be flooded with natural light via five skylights.

Work is also progressing above ground: Since the beginning of August, water, power and telecommunications cables have been relocated to clear the way for the northern entrance. Within the station’s construction site, which is around 200 metres long, a total of around 20 kilometres of utility routes will be relocated by the end of 2027. Beneath the ‘The Spin’ high-rise, the construction pit for the south-east entrance is taking shape. The station has a total of four entrances.

The extension of the U5 is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Frankfurt am Main. The approximately 2.7-kilometre-long line will in future connect the Europaviertel directly to Frankfurt’s underground network and make an important contribution to sustainable mobility in the growing metropolis. A total of four new stations are planned: Güterplatz, Emser Brücke/Messe, Europagarten and Europaviertel West.
