A major road running through mining heritage: PORR is resurfacing the B 224 in Essen

PORR is modernising a central section of the B 224 federal road in the area around Zeunerstraße and Bredeneyer Kreuz on behalf of the City of Essen, with work due to be completed by March 2027. The project involves one of the most important urban transport links in the Ruhr region. Consequently, the demands placed on the construction process and traffic management are particularly high.

PORR is modernising a central section of the B 224 federal road on behalf of the City of Essen.

The B 224 links the south of Essen with the city centre as well as neighbouring towns such as Velbert and Wuppertal, and is one of the busiest routes in the region. Any work carried out on the infrastructure has a direct impact on the flow of traffic throughout the wider area. Against this backdrop, the project is being carried out in close consultation with transport authorities and operators, with a clear focus on completion on schedule and minimal disruption.

Complete rehabilitation and accessibility upgrades

At the heart of the project is the comprehensive rehabilitation of the carriageway. Around 10,000 square metres of asphalt will be renewed, supplemented by noise-reducing surface layers. In addition, the ‘Bredeney’ and ‘Bredeneyer Kreuz’ bus stops will be completely refurbished to ensure accessibility and brought up to the latest technical standards. This represents a significant contribution to improving public infrastructure.

Integrated mine safety measures

A particular challenge is the need to secure former underground mining structures. Targeted exploration and safety measures are planned for one section of the route and will be carried out in parallel with the road construction. This combination of conventional transport route engineering and specialist measures significantly increases the planning and logistical complexity of the project.

Work across many construction phases in confined conditions

Construction will take place across a total of 15 construction phases within a densely built-up inner-city environment. In addition to the high volume of traffic, neighbouring commercial premises and residents also shape the conditions at the construction site. The piecemeal nature of the construction requires precise organisation and coordinated processes to minimise disruption to ongoing operations as much as possible.
