Tunneling

A new generation takes over in Forbach:
Construction of the pumped-storage power station is progressing

Deep within the Black Forest, construction of the new Forbach pumped-storage power station is continuing to take shape. Inside the mountain, work is proceeding according to plan; the PORR tunnelling team is currently focusing on the progress of concrete works and lining in the underground caverns, as well as on the key construction phases of the water-carrying systems. Step by step, the technical backbone of the future plant is taking shape underground.

Work is currently focused on the progress of concrete pouring and outfitting in the underground caverns. Concrete is being poured continuously in the caverns of the Schwarzenbach plant, the Murg plant as well as the transformer cavern; step by step, the technical heart of the future plant is taking shape. At the same time, the teams are pressing ahead with the outfitting of the Murg and Schwarzenbach underwater tunnels. The floor and vault are being constructed in sections, giving the water-carrying systems their final shape.

Significant progress is also visible in the headwater areas. For the Schwarzenbach plant, the first sections of the steel lining have already been installed by the subsequent contractor. The PORR tunnelling team then encased the steel pipes in concrete, thereby securing them structurally for the long term. Another important step towards future commissioning.

At the outlet structure, meanwhile, a construction phase has been successfully completed: PORR special civil engineering has finished all anchoring work. With the tensioning of the anchors now beginning, the groundwork for the next construction phase is being laid. Excavation of the construction pit will then commence, marking the start of the next phase of this complex infrastructure project.

From existing power station to the energy storage facility of the future

Alongside these construction advances, the project also marks a historic turning point for the Forbach site. At the end of March, the Schwarzenbach plant section in Forbach was officially decommissioned following over 100 years of operation, during a ceremony organised by the client, EnBW. In a few weeks’ time, the Murg plant will also be decommissioned. This brings to an end the history of one of the region’s most historic energy facilities. At the same time, a new chapter begins: with the modern pumped-storage power station, a forward-looking energy storage facility is being created here that will make an important contribution to the stability of the energy system in the future.
