The installation of the precast girders on Structure 8 marks another important milestone in the progress of the superstructure and finishing works. At the same time, the completion of the concrete works on Structure 9 lays the groundwork for the subsequent work on waterproofing, fit-out and connection areas.

To ensure the construction process runs smoothly, the team has systematically integrated the specific constraints at the Marzahn transport hub into the execution of the works. Despite the oblique geometry of the structure and the associated challenges in formwork for the frame and cross beams, precision-fit solutions were implemented. Furthermore, the extensive reinforcement work, involving a high degree of reinforcement, was reliably carried out thanks to intensive preparation. Critical deadlines, such as those for road closures and the installation of the precast girders, were reliably met through increased staffing and shift work. The limited space on site was organised through forward-looking logistics planning and close coordination with all parties involved, ensuring that the work could proceed efficiently and on schedule.

The Marzahn transport hub encompasses the junction of Landsberger Allee and Märkischer Allee, as well as the long-distance and S-Bahn track systems of Deutsche Bahn. On behalf of the State of Berlin – represented by the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment – PORR-structural engineering, in a joint venture with KEMNA BAU Ost, is carrying out the replacement construction and modernisation of key structures. The modernised junction will make traffic in eastern Berlin safer. At the same time, it will enhance the future viability of the infrastructure and ensure a noticeably smoother flow of traffic.

By the end of 2025, composite precast beams (VFT) had already been hoisted over the track systems at Structure 9 within a tightly scheduled timeframe – a milestone for the construction process whilst rail services continue to operate.

From July 2026, access is to be guaranteed for subsequent trades working on Structure 9. For the team on site, this means that every further stage brings Berlin a step closer to a safer, future-proof transport hub.
