Construction progress on the religious community's housing project in Münster: Special challenge posed by Münsterland gravel sand train

Münster, / Building construction

The residential project for the Münster religious community on the edge of the Pluggendorf monastery grounds, which is being carried out by PORR as general contractor, is progressing according to plan. Following completion of the excavation pit shoring, the soil is currently being excavated on one side of the construction site, while the base is already being laid on the other side.

Drainage of the excavation pit posed a particular challenge. The construction project is located in the Münsterland gravel sand formation – a geologically distinctive area with highly permeable layers of sand and gravel. Permanent water drainage is required to ensure safe and dry construction progress. The quantities of water pumped out must be monitored precisely in order to meet both technical and environmental requirements. ‘Despite careful preparation, the drainage proved to be challenging, but our team was able to master it successfully,’ explains PORR site manager Aylin Güresci.

In addition to completing the excavation pit shoring, the crane has already been erected. This means that the conditions for the next construction phases are now in place.

The project comprises a five-storey apartment building with 57 flats, an underground car park and outdoor facilities. Each flat will have direct access to the outdoors, and the attic flats will be designed as maisonettes. With this construction project, the religious order is actively shaping the urban quarter and focusing on sophisticated architecture and functional design.
