Successful Handover at the Tiefstack Thermal Storage Facility in Hamburg

Hamburg , / Special civil engineering

There’s a noticeable buzz of activity at the heat storage facility construction site in the Tiefstack Energy Park: The machinery is in operation, the construction project is steadily taking shape, and right in the middle of it all, a crucial handoff is taking place. After several intensive weeks of special civil engineering work, PORR has handed the “baton” over to the building construction team as scheduled. The project is being carried out on behalf of Hamburger Energiewerke GmbH and is a key component of the city’s future heat supply.

Construction work at a large-scale construction site in an industrial area: In the foreground, numerous bored piles are being driven using machinery and construction workers; next to them are containers, excavators, and a drilling rig. In the background, a river with a bridge, industrial buildings, as well as several high-voltage power lines stretch out beneath a cloudy sky.

A total of 59 large-diameter bored piles were driven into the subsoil.

Until recently, a drilling rig dominated the scene at the power plant site. A total of 59 large bored piles, each 88 centimeters in diameter and approximately 21 meters long, were driven into the subsoil. Together with additional bored piles, they form the foundation for the heat storage tank, which stands over 50 meters tall.

The work took place under challenging conditions due to the high groundwater level, limited space, and ongoing operations in the vicinity of the power plant. The bored piles were constructed using casing and water loading, thereby providing the necessary stability for the thermal storage facility.

Today, the construction site has entered a new phase: The pile heads have been exposed and are currently being cut to length; reinforcement work is getting underway. The next major phase—the pouring of the foundation slab—is imminent. This will take place in a continuous operation lasting approximately 16 hours and marks another visible milestone on the construction site.

With the handover at the end of April, the PORR building construction Nord team will now take over the next steps. Immediately afterward, work will continue with the construction of the foundations before the thermal storage facility itself begins to rise. At the same time, other structures such as the stair tower and the adjacent technical building are gradually taking shape.

The close integration between special civil engineering and building construction is evident not only in terms of organization but also very concretely on the construction site: seamless handovers, coordinated processes, and a shared goal of reliably advancing construction progress.
