Refurbishment for 100,000 vehicles per day: PORR modernises Dortmund/Unna junction

Unna, / Transport route engineering / News

Since early April 2025, PORR Verkehrswegebau, Münster/Dortmund branch, has been modernising the busy A1 motorway in the Unna area on behalf of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes. The renovation work aims to completely renew the carriageway. This will sustainably improve performance and traffic safety at one of the most important transport hubs in the Ruhr area.

The image shows a street scene during a construction phase. The focus is on three large asphalt pavers applying fresh asphalt to the road. To the left is a road roller with orange wheels, which is used to compact the asphalt. Several workers in high-visibility clothing are actively engaged in road work around the machines. The sky is partly cloudy, and trees and other infrastructure can be seen in the background.

Since April 2025, PORR's Münster/Dortmund transport infrastructure construction branch has been carrying out extensive modernisation work on the busy section of the A1 motorway near Unna on behalf of the federal motorway company Autobahn GmbH.

The measure requires the utmost precision: in addition to close coordination with parallel infrastructure projects, temporary traffic management measures must be put in place, which require flexible adaptation of the construction processes. Throughout the entire construction period, emergency ramps must be kept clear and an emergency lane must be ensured. In addition, noise-sensitive time windows restrict working hours.

Complex conditions require precise planning

The construction site requires close coordination between various specialist teams, such as traffic safety and protective equipment, which are often working in parallel. In order to meet these complex conditions, the team relies on precise scheduling and highly flexible construction organisation. Several divisions are working hand in hand on this project. In addition to PORR Verkehrswegebau, which is in charge, PORR Gussasphalt and PORR Transport und Frästechnik are also involved.

Environmentally friendly construction for sustainable infrastructure

One focus is on environmentally friendly construction: the material from the old concrete carriageway is processed and reused directly on site, reducing transport distances and conserving resources. Contaminated materials are disposed of properly in accordance with the applicable environmental and waste disposal regulations. To comply with noise protection regulations, construction noise is continuously monitored and reduced by appropriate measures if necessary.

With the renovation of the Dortmund/Unna motorway junction, the PORR Group is pursuing the goal of not only bringing the infrastructure in the Ruhr area up to the latest technical standards, but also creating the basis for safe and efficient traffic flow.
