Berlin's city ring road continues to grow: A100 opens to traffic
Berlin , / Transport route engineering
On 27 August 2025, the 16th construction phase of the A100 federal motorway in Berlin was ceremoniously opened to traffic. The new 3.2-kilometre section between the Neukölln motorway junction and the Am Treptower Park junction strengthens the capital with an efficient traffic artery. On behalf of the Senate Department for Urban Development and Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, PORR carried out several construction phases of this important link in the areas of transport route engineering, structural engineering and special civil engineering.
The ceremony was accompanied by speeches from Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, Chairman of the Management Board of motorways GmbH Dr Michael Güntner as well as Governing Mayor of Berlin Kai Wegner.
The A100 is considered a central artery in Berlin's road network. The expansion improves the connection of the eastern districts to the supra-regional motorway network and facilitates access to BER Airport. The new route runs mostly in a trough up to seven metres deep, significantly reducing noise and environmental impacts for residents.
Construction with maximum precision
The construction work placed the highest logistical demands on the site team. In particular, the limited access and the continuous in-situ concrete reinforcement of the central reservation required precise planning. The expansion included a complex drainage system, base layers made of concrete and natural stone, an asphalt carriageway with open-pored asphalt for noise reduction and improved drainage, as well as the millimetre-precise installation of over seven kilometres of box gutters to drain rainwater via an underground pumping system.
PORR was involved in several construction phases of the A100 with its services in transport route engineering, structural engineering and special civil engineering. The work was carried out in close coordination, a prime example of coordinated project work and bundled expertise. With completion and acceptance on schedule, nothing stands in the way of the smooth use of the new route – a milestone for mobility in Berlin.
