Modernising two key railway lines in Poland

Vienna/Warsaw, / Construction projects / Press Release

PORR has been awarded two major contracts by Polish railway infrastructure operator PKP PLK. The contracts involve the modernisation of line 108 between Jasło and Nowy Zagórz and line 104 between Rabka Zaryte and Fornale – and have a total value of over EUR 372m (approx. PLN 1.6 bn). The planned work will go a long way to improving transport connections in south-eastern Poland.

Line 108

  • Project type: Modernisation of line 108 between Jasło and Nowy Zagórz

  • Contract volume: EUR 240m (PLN 1.04 bn)

Line 104

  • Project type: Modernisation of line 104 between Rabka Zaryte and Fornale
  • Project duration: 24 months
  • Contract volume: EUR 132m (PLN 567m) – PORR interest of around 90.5%

“Polish railway construction is among the most dynamic in Europe. We are delighted to be making an important contribution to modernising the railways with our technical knowhow – especially now, where we can apply our expertise to improving transport links in the south-east and strengthening the infrastructure near the border”, said Karl-Heinz Strauss, CEO of PORR.

The tender process for railway line 108 saw PORR S.A. emerge with the highest number of points, thereby securing the contract for the design and planning services – including signalling technology and telecommunications – as well as for all of the construction work. The aim is to comprehensively modernise the railway infrastructure in the direction of the Bieszczady Mountains. The contract is worth EUR 240m (PLN 1.04 bn).

Line 108: An important step for the Bieszczady region

In addition to renewing the Jasło–Nowy Zagórz section of the line, PORR will comprehensively modernise the technical and structural infrastructure: A total of 18 stations and stops will be modernised over a distance of 80 km, 6 new stops will be built, 78 sets of points will be replaced, and 80 level crossings will be rebuilt. All new infrastructure will be designed to be barrier-free. “This project is an important step for the sustainable development of the Bieszczady region”, said Strauss.

The highlight of the project is the long-awaited undergrounding of the tracks in the urban area of Krosno. PORR will build a 1,650 m long tunnel using the open construction method – around 330 m of which will be driven using the cut-and-cover method. In addition, 3 railway tunnels and 3 road viaducts will be built as part of the modernisation. The planned construction period is around 44 months, with the first trains scheduled to run on the new line by the end of 2028.

Line 104: Traversing the Małopolska region at 120 km/h

Together with its partner Trakcja System Sp. z o.o., PORR has also won a second contract from PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A.: The modernisation of line 104 between Rabka Zaryte and Fornale aims to make transport in the Małopolska region more efficient, reduce travel times to Zakopane and Nowy Sącz, and improve transport links between Poland and Slovakia. The newly built track will enable train speeds of up to 120 km/h. The contract also includes the electrification of the railway line and the construction of platforms at the stops in Raba Niżna and Mszana Dolna Marki, as well as at Mszana Dolna station.

The 15 km section comprises a total of 66 engineering structures, including 9 railway bridges, 4 road bridges, 5 viaducts and an underpass at Mszana Dolna station. 11 level crossings will be modernised to improve traffic safety. Up to 16 existing level crossings will be replaced, for example by a system of parallel roads, in order to improve traffic flow along the railway line.

The construction site on the Rabka Zaryte – Mszana Dolna section will be taken over from the previous contractor. On the remaining part of the line, work will initially begin with the dismantling of the existing railway infrastructure. The work will be completed in the third quarter of 2027 after a 24-month period.
